Furniture For A Cause opened in March 2004 as an additional source of revenue for the many programs SAMMinistries provides to the homeless of San Antonio. Since 1983, SAMMinistries has been helping our community with emergency shelter, transitional housing and programs that help entire families become self-sufficient by providing shelter, access to meals and medical care through our collaborating partners. We offer life skills training classes to educate them about issues such as parenting, fiscal responsibility, time management and many other valuable resources. Furniture For A Cause also provides a work readiness program for shelter guests.
Each piece of furniture donated to Furniture For A Cause is sold to benefit homeless men, women and children who need our support to get back on their feet with dignity and hope. To learn more about the specific programs that your donation is contributing to click below or visit www.samm.org.

A HUGE thank you to volunteer James Scarl who was nominated for the Volunteer of the Year Award 2010. James is a vibrant 20 year old young man who is a participant of the North East Transition Services, whose mission is to assist NEISD students with disabilities to become contributing members of the community. Though he was born with a leaning disability, James developed a love for carpentry early on and is able to fully develop that love through volunteering at the store. For the past year, he has volunteered at Furniture For A Cause three days a week and has dedicated over 650 hours of service. His impact at the store has been a complete blessing. Not only is his productivity an aid as we have a strong young man to lift, assemble, and inventory, but he lifts the moral of staff on a daily basis though his bright smile and caring personality. James has made a family of friends here at Furniture For A Cause and we are forever grateful to James and the North East Transition Services for bringing us together.

The Emergency Shelter, located at 910 W. Commerce, serves single men and women, as well as families. This is a walk-in shelter and serves guests on a first come, first served basis. During inclement weather, additional space is utilized and cots are used to accommodate as many people as possible. In collaboration with various agencies, we are able to provide, but are not limited to access to nutritious meals, healthcare, counseling, legal, employment services and housing assistance. We also offer several programs to help in job training, educational needs, and life skills to help our guests succeed in taking steps toward self-sufficiency.

Our Transitional Living and Learning Center (TLLC) is a facility to promote the success of families with children under the age of 18. Families are offered a two year program in which they can pay off their debts and, at the same time, receive numerous services and support including educational programs, parenting and money management classes, and a support through a personal Case Manager. Because the program is extensive and space is limited, requirements are necessary and admittance is made through an application process.
